Music Has No Boundaries

Music is something that brings people together. We are seeing this now more than ever. With hip hop culture slowly transitioning into what we call pop culture, we are seeing people of different races and backgrounds come together because of similar interests musically.

More importantly, it is putting a microscope on different social issues prominent amongst different demographics. Music promotes lifestyle and culture, which makes those who have not experienced certain asband-691224_640pects of life interested. In some ways this benefits communities succeeding musically. Particular during times of struggle, having good musical representation helps provide a spokesman on behalf of the community. This person has the megaphone to draw attention to the needs of the community and rally all people from all walks of life around certain issues.

For example we are seeing this happen a lot with the violence in Chicago Illinois. While for many years it has gone unnoticed, the rise of many young artists coming from the inner city has shed light to the overwhelming happenings. In fact, it has even forced hometown resident president Barack Obama to speak on the issues consistently and deliver actionable plans. It is truly powerful how musical transcendence can impact political agenda and business endeavors. If great cause is not tied to business or profit, people tend to be less supportive. It is important to be socially conscious of community and how our own actions in business can impact others.

While a local small business is making money selling guns whether legally or illegally, young kids in the south side of Chicago use the guns to end the lives of their peers before they see high school graduation. Such things should not go unpunished whether caused directly or indirectly. It is important to get to the root of the problem. So subtly, the music has constantly reiterated that message. We must not ignore issues because they do not affect us. We must become apart of the solution or we are apart of the problem.

What you will find is that people grow guilty about knowing the lyrics and the underlying meaning to songs that express struggle but they take no action to help the problem. Subconsciously, they know they should not only appreciate the music, but feel the urge to spread the message. This is how music transcends humanity. It taps into the one constant amongst us all, which is compassion, human emotion, or the ability to feel. The ability to evoke emotion allows musicians to direct the action of the people. It forces the agenda of politicians, and gives support to community leaders.

Music, business, and politics go hand in hand. Each element tugs at the other.  However, music has no boundaries. Freedom of speech is what makes it more powerful than the rest. There are no confines as to where people can go musically, which is why the medium is so powerful.

The Music Business & Technology

Many people find passion in music, but have no clue how to propel their career. Most believe that without a record deal from a large corporation like Sony or the Def Jams of the world, they can never realize their musical aspirations. In today’s time that couldn’t be further from the truth.music-business-and-technology

The Internet has leveled the playing field in many industries. Music just so happens to be one of them. In fact, it is at the forefront of pioneering the collapse of an industry that was once predicated on a systematic structure that made the mega players the only ones relevant to everyday listeners.

But now people are consuming music at a rate unseen before. In fact, people are constantly looking for new music everyday. So much so, that they do not mind giving a chance to the amateur around the way who posts their videos on Youtube hoping to catch someone’s attention. This has given everyone a shot to create a core audience for themselves.

More artists than ever are finding their niche and building fan bases that allow them to sustain quality lifestyles just from small gigs locally and beyond. These artists are finding that they are in fact able to get rid of a lot of the negatives that come from doing business with mid to large size music business entities. The equity split remains in their favor, and they are complete entrepreneurs. They will only eat what they kill, yet for many artists they find it so much more rewarding when their passion begins to pay the bills and they managed to get their on their own.

This was an unforeseen revelation in the music industry. Everyone thought that the biggest artists would always belong to the historically great companies that have given us so many artists we know and love. However, artists are beginning to realize that the Internet has given them all of the power to create the career they dreamed of and beyond.

Music entities are chasing after artists with little to know money if they have managed to build out a core following in their cities. Mainly because of the new element of virality that comes into play, an artist with an underground buzz could blow up at any moment given how fast information gets passed along.

So the answer to the age old question of how do I get my music off the ground, is simple. Make good music, and share it with your immediate community. Continue to make quality music with great visuals on your own and someone will want to become a part in a relationship that remains highly beneficial for you but on a greater scale than what your finances may allow. Nonetheless with or without the deal, you can have a great music career thanks to the technology that has taken the industry by storm.
